Then They Came — Lorraine Onduru’s Debut Novel
Everything we do flows from three interconnected commitments — to stories, to storytellers, and to the communities they serve.
We believe that words create worlds for people, ushering them into new patterns of thought, belief, and perspectives. We focus on creative content originating in Africa that tells stories of personal, community, or national transformation — in the form of adult and children’s fiction, non-fiction, poetry, memoirs, and more.
Published Examples
Amani and the Last Seed by Cynthia Wambua

We help new writers discover their unique voice and perspective by providing resources to help them hone their craft. Through structured programmes and personal mentorship, we are investing in the next generation of African literary voices.
Initiatives
We help children and youth gain access to wholesome content that inculcates a love for reading and writing — an avenue through which they can gain new perspectives and ways of thinking.
By nurturing young readers today, we are cultivating Africa’s confident, creative thinkers of tomorrow. We partner with schools, libraries, and community organisations to bring our children’s titles to the readers who need them most.

Cynthia Wambua believes that the most powerful tool for change is a story that dares to imagine. Her relationship with words began at the age of twelve, when she would spin tales for her classmates. That early spark has since grown into a multi-disciplinary career in filmmaking and communications — but her heart remains anchored in the boundless potential of children’s literature.
To Cynthia, writing is a pathway for mental liberation. She pushes the boundaries of her own imagination to create worlds where the “impossible” is simply a starting point. By focusing on children’s literature, she aims to preserve the limitless dreaming that adulthood often stifles. Her books are more than just stories — they are invitations for children to see themselves as heroes, change-makers, and the rightful heirs to a legacy of African greatness.
“I want children to not only look up to heroes of past generations, but to also understand that the same greatness — and more — flows through them.”
— Cynthia Wambua
About the Book

Set against the sweeping landscapes of the African savannah, Amani’s story is one of courage, identity, and the belief that a child’s hands can hold the future of a continent. Illustrated by Izzy MB.

She Shall be Called Woman tells the story of the identity of the woman from a perspective of faith and God’s word. The story is told through the journeys of 18 women from various walks of life who showcase how they came to understand who God had called them to be.
“In the beginning, God created… These five words from Genesis 1:1 indicate that before our existence as we know it on the earth, God was. He is the context for the world we dwell in and our very existence.”
— From the Book
About the Book
He created Man — male and female — in His image and likeness, conferring on us the dominion to reign on the earth. She Shall be Called Woman unpacks what it means to be formed in that image: designed to resemble God in nature, thought, action, and ability.

Out of Africa — Stories that Shape Africa’s Future is the culminating published work of the residency: a curated anthology of short stories from the 12 participating writers.
Out of Africa is a bold call to awaken the profound beauty resident in Africans and showcase the wealth of innovation and ingenuity to transform the continent and the world. The theme invites fiction stories that explore this vision — and will be published in an anthology by the same name.
